A 29-YEAR-old man with mental health issues has been jailed for six months after assaulting four police officers.

Shane Broome, of Otley Street, Keighley, was said to have been suffering from drug-related psychotic symptoms when he rang police threatening to cut someone in October last year.

When two police officers arrived at his home, he came out brandishing a knife and threatening to kill them.

They backed off and firearms officers stepped in, leading to his arrest.

But later at the police station he attempted to headbutt another officer and spat blood from a self-inflicted lip wound towards another police officer.

Broome pleaded guilty to affray, four counts of assaulting an emergency worker and damaging police handcuffs to the value of £17.95.

In mitigation Bradford Crown Court heard that during his time in custody Broome had been able to "gain a better insight" into how he needed to take his medication in order to feel well and that he was now on a higher dose.

Recorder Catherine Silverton said: "These officers were going about their duties and they deserve to be protected."

She sentenced Broome to six months imprisonment in total.
