In June 1977, Bierley footbridge over the busy Rooley Lane had collapsed after being hit by earth moving equipment being carried on the back of a low loader.

None of the three crew were hurt and no one was walking across the footbridge or on the pavements at the time.

According to one eyewitness “It was like a miniature earthquake.” The bridge which was built in 1974 was likely to cost over £60,000 to replace.
