OPENING its doors on February 25, 1970, Yeadon’s newest supermarket, Morrisons. At a cost of £250,000 the retailing giant hoped that the town’s residents would be impressed with its immense variety of stocks, tempting displays and wide-aisled sections.

Alongside the supermarket’s 22,000 square feet of shopping area there was also a cafeteria for light snacks on the first floor, a children’s fairground outside the rear entrance and situated on sloping land near Harper Lane, a kiddie climbing frame and tree stump.

A warm welcome was assured for all shoppers not only by the friendly checkout staff but also by the warm-air curtains above each door.
