THE Shrove Tuesday Pancake Race which was set to take place this afternoon has been cancelled.

There had been a huge push for office workers to use their lunch hours and take on the other challengers in the event.

But Bradford Cathedral has now revealed not enough teams signed up.

A spokesperson for the event said: "The planned Pancake Race due to take place on Tuesday 25th February in Centenary Square has unfortunately been cancelled. Although there was plenty of interest in the event and everything was ready to proceed, we weren't able to secure the number of teams we needed to make it a challenging competition.

"We'd like to thank all those who signed up and as well as Bradford BID, Bradford Council, the Lord Mayor's Office and other partners for all their hard work and support, and we look forward to exploring other events in the future."

Organisers are now hoping to rearrange the pancake fest to another time.

It was due to take place in Centenary Square, from 12.30 to 1.30pm.

Teams of four were asked to face a series of four heats over four laps of the 140-metre course with the top four groups going into the grand final for the pancake race winners’ trophy.
