KEIGHLEY district Scouts staged a day of activities across the town.

A range of events was held on Saturday to celebrate Founder’s Day – when Scouts around the world mark the birthday of the movement’s founder, Robert Baden-Powell.

Attractions in the Airedale Shopping Centre included indoor versions of archery, caving and kayaking.

There were information stands with details of all Scouting sections and how children and adults could get involved, and a chance for people to learn more about working towards the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award.

Beavers and Cubs took part in a scavenger hunt around the town centre, searching for Scouting badges in shop windows. Support was provided by traders in the Keighley Business Improvement District.

And Scouts and Explorers tackled the Keighley District Monopoly Run, with teams being challenged to visit all group headquarters – and complete other tasks – within a set time.

Other targets for the 60 young participants ranged from photographing a police officer eating a chocolate bar, to getting a picture of a phone box.

The challenge was won by a team from 1st Keighley (Fell Lane) Scouts.

As part of the day, there was also an unveiling of Haworth Scouts’ new mascot – Stella the cow.

Organisers said the event had been a huge success.

“Many people made it down to see us – despite the weather – and a great day was had by all,” said a spokesman. “We hope to be back next year!”

Scouting numbers in the Keighley district are on the rise.

Currently there are 622 young members across all sections – Beavers, Cubs, Scouts and Explorers – an increase of 38 on last year.

More than 250 adult volunteers are working in groups, plus there are district and service teams plus 18 people in young leadership roles.

A busy programme of events is planned.

The Beaver, Cub and Scout sections all have their Challenge Flag competitions.

In April, it is the Scouts camp cooking competition, held over a weekend, and the St George’s Day parade and service.

And the following month will see a fun run take place.
