THE district is on alert tonight and into tomorrow as the Met Office gives an amber warning for rain and a yellow warning for wind as Storm Dennis heads towards the region.

The worst of the storm is expected to hit later tonight as the heaviest of the rain is due from midnight.

West Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service said it was on full alert.

A spokesman for the Cleckheaton station said they had extra crew, including additional boat crew, as river levels were expected to rise again.

The effects of Storm Ciara led to 765 emergency calls into the fire and rescue service's control room during a 12 hour period and crews carried out more than 50 rescues in water related incidents.

Other fire stations across the regions reported very little activity, allowing them to gather strength to tackle any incidents which may occur

Much of the district is saturated following last weekend's storm and emergency services say they are ready and on stand-by to deal with whatever Storm Dennis brings.

While the winds are not expected to be as strong as last weekend, they are still expected to each over 50 mph with gusts in excess of that particularly across higher ground.

Flood alerts have been issued for the Upper and Middle River Aire catchment areas, likely to affect Cononley Washlands and further down towards Shipley.

Help from The Yorkshire Regiment is on hand at Mytholmroyd fire station where Army personnel have been helping with the reinforcement of flood defences ahead of the storm.

Military personnel from Catterick were also on hand in Ilkley to put up flood barriers, under instruction from the Environment Agency, in case of flooding.

Network Rail is encouraging people to check before they travel this weekend as some journeys are likely to be disrupted.
