A CONCERT has been cancelled and a swimming pool will remain closed all weekend ahead of Storm Dennis hitting the district.

The River Wharfe at Ilkley is expecting higher than average water levels this weekend, peaking sometime on Sunday.

A Bradford Council spokesperson said: "Consideration is being given to the installation of a temporary flood barrier to protect vulnerable properties at Denton Road, Middleton Avenue and Clifford Road.

"Road cones will be installed this evening to help reduce any problems with vehicles should this work proceed and wardens will speak with affected residents in the morning.

"The ‘Travelling Wilburys concert tomorrow evening has been cancelled and the swimming pool will be closed all weekend."

The concert was due to take place at Ilkley's King's Hall tomorrow.

A spokesperson said: "Because of Amber Warnings for rain issued by the Met Office and advanced flood warnings from by the Environment Agency for much of the Bradford district including Ilkley, it is necessary for the venue to be set up as an Emergency Rest Centre, to provide shelter for anyone who may be affected by the storm."

It will now visit King's Hall, Ilkley, on Saturday, April 10.

The spokesperson added: "Officers from Bradford Theatres are working hard to notify customers who have booked to see the show. In the first instance, Bradford Theatres will try and move customers to the rescheduled performance date.

"However, if the rescheduled date is no longer convenient, Bradford Theatres are happy to provide full refunds to these customers.

Mike Powell Emergency Planning Manager at Bradford Council, said: “We’re really sorry that this event has had to be cancelled, but the safety of residents and visitors to the district is the most important thing.

"Because of the severity of the forecast and warnings for Storm Dennis and due to the ground being already saturated from Storm Ciara, we need to put plans in place to help those that may be affected this includes opening Emergency Rest Centres that are safe and dry.

“I’d like to thank The Traveling Wilburys Songbook for their understanding and for working with our Bradford Theatres staff to reschedule their performance.”
