Apple's much-hyped iPhone prompted a rush to stores across the district when it launched last night.

Carphone Warehouse, O2 and Apple experienced queues and a surge of customers when the must-have gadget went on sale at 6.02pm.

The iPhone is tipped to be the biggest selling Christmas technology gift - despite some criticism of its £269 price tag.

Last night, dozens queued outside the O2 shop in the Kirkgate Centre, which was open late for the launch.

Martin Clapham, 21, of Wibsey, one of the first to get his hands on the gadget, said: "There's been so much hype about it and everyone wants one. The main appeal is it's an iPod and phone as well."

Christine Kelly, 39, of Sandy Lane, said: "It's new and it's got everything on it - internet access, phone, camera and so on. It's all integrated into one.

"I have known about it for a few months and wanted to be one of the first to get one."

Jonny Metcalfe, 19, of Thackley, said: "It's something different. I am a fan of all iPods, but this is a bit special."

The new phone will only run on the O2 network, with owners signing an 18-month contract on tariffs of £35, £45 or £55 per month.

The 8GB device combines a touch-sensitive phone handset with a built-in iPod media player and a wireless internet browser.

The iPhone went on sale simultaneously in Apple stores, O2 outlets and the Carphone Warehouse. Although the launch was yesterday, Carphone Warehouse expects today to be its biggest sales day.

Mohammed Hussain, sales consultant at Carphone Warehouse, in Kirkgate, Bradford, said: "It sells itself - it's unbelievable.

"So many people have come in here over the last few months asking when the launch will be and wanting to have a peek at the iPhone.

"The technology is the best in the world at the moment, but in a quick-moving market like this, no doubt Sony or someone else will be looking to bring out something to compete.

"We have to maximise every sale while it's unique."

Mr Hussain said the iPhone appealed to younger and older generations.

"It's got something that attracts every generation. It's going to be brilliant, especially in the run up to Christmas because it's a great thing to have as a present," he said.
