When Sandra and David Brassington bought this house it didn't have that much sought-after wow' factor - but it certainly does now!

It was just meant to be a project that they would do up, sell and then move on to the next one. But you know what they say about the best laid plans...

"My husband's a builder and we bought the house because it was on such a huge plot," says Sandra. "It had plenty of room for two houses and the plan was to do up the main house and sell it; but as everything started taking shape there was just something about it, so we decided to move in."

The plot in Lucy Hall Drive, Baildon, was certainly large enough to accommodate a couple of four bedroom, three bathroom homes with good sized gardens, which still left plenty of room for Sandra and David's home to have a lovely garden.

"We back on to other gardens, so it's lovely and peaceful with pretty views," she says. "When you look at the place now, it's quite amazing to remember how big it was.

"It was very different when we bought it. The previous owner had brought up her children there and they'd long gone, so I hope she won't mind my saying it was very dated."

Of course, being a builder, David couldn't just move in and live there; he had to make considerable changes.

"We've put on an extension which incorporates a garage, large kitchen, two double bedrooms and a house bathroom. All the work took about six months and then we moved in and finished everything off," Sandra says.

They've also taken quite a few walls down. "We took down the wall between the lounge and dining room to make a through room with French doors to the patio and multi-paned oak doors into the dining kitchen.

"We've actually done something to every room, such as oak floors throughout the ground floor, a nice house bathroom with double-ended spa bath, an en-suite with double shower and a contemporary chrome and beech spindled banister and hand rail."

But it's the kitchen which is undoubtedly Sandra's pride and joy.

"All the work took about six months and then we moved in and finished everything off. When we went looking for a kitchen, David was set on something more conservative in dark oak, and then I saw this high gloss black kitchen. David said he wasn't sure, but he let me have my way. And it's fantastic, especially with the plain white walls and oak floor.

"We put in black granite worktops with a slight sparkle, and the whole room has a definite wow' factor. I think the kitchen chose me instead of the other way around. It looks just wonderful. I like cooking and there's plenty of room for people to help or just talk to me, and of course the fridge with the wine in it is very handy," she laughs.

David and his lads' were responsible for the major works, but the decor is Sandra's province.

"I like taking older houses and giving the interior a modern decor. If it's done properly, it looks great. I like the character, the little alcoves and the split-level that I have in the kitchen."

Just a short distance from Shipley Glen and countryside walks, this is a light and airy family home with an entrance hall with cloakroom, through lounge, dining kitchen with plenty of integrated units, gas hob and electric oven, four bedrooms and a house bathroom.

"We took the wall down between two bedrooms to make a lovely master bedroom and put in an en-suite in white with a double shower cubicle and tiled walls and floor. Done in taupe and brown, it's a lovely restful space.

"There are two more double bedrooms - one overlooking the garden and another the front of the house - and one which has a solid oak floor that we use as an office. The house bathroom is tiled to dado rail height and has a double ended Jacuzzi bath with shower head.

"The beauty of the layout is that if you needed more bedrooms, you could easily turn the master bedroom back into two rooms.

"We didn't have to do too much outside, but we did level the garden and put in a lawn and patio. Fortunately we already had some mature trees, so the garden looks well established, and it's quite private. On a sunny day the garden gets the sun all day from mid-morning.

"My husband's spotted another project, so I'm afraid we're going to have to bite the bullet and move on. Obviously I'm going to miss the kitchen, but it's not just that. I love the whole house. It's a really nice place and I've loved living here.

"Unfortunately I can't just rip out the kitchen and take it with me, but I have stipulated that in the new house I want this kitchen replicated. But being a builder's wife you never can tell, and I do love getting my teeth into new projects.

"Our loss is someone else's gain, because the house has been refurbished to a very high spec. The new owners will be able to just move in and plonk their furniture down - or grab a glass of wine, which is what I would do!"
