PLANS to install two electric vehicle charging points at a soon to open Starbucks cafe have been approved.

A new branch of the coffee giant is currently under construction on Leeds Road in Thornbury.

Late last year a planning application to install two rapid EV charging points and associated equipment in the cafe's car park were submitted.

That application has now been approved by Bradford Council, with officers saying the points will aid the Council's green transport ambitions.

Planning officers said the charge points: "Will enable the charging of plug-in vehicles in a safe, accessible and convenient location without being detrimental to the character and appearance of the neighbouring streetscene and the amenities of neighbouring occupiers.

New West Yorkshire car charging network launched in Bradford

"Central Government requires Local Authorities to be at the forefront of an electric car revolution making it easier for drivers to make green choices. This is reflected in the National Planning Policy Framework, which states that development should be designed to enable charging of plug-in and other ultra-low emission vehicles in safe, accessible and convenient locations."

An opening date for the cafe has yet to be announced.

Recent months have seen numerous applications for EV charging points to be installed in car parks of shopping centres, restaurants and take aways.
