TWO MEN have been seriously injured in a crash on High Street, Heckmondwike, last night after reportedly being involved in a police pursuit.

The two were reported injured when their Honda Civic crashed into parked vehicles - a Volkswagen Jetta and a van - outside Dixy Chicken at about 9pm.

The fire service said one person was trapped in the car and had to be extracated.

It is not known the extent of their injuries but locals reported that at least one of them was taken to hospital.

A video by Haseem Arslan shows several emergency vehicles at the scene in the town centre.

Mr Arslan, who lives round the corner, said he heard the collision as the car hit the parked cars and neighbours had told him about the police pursuit.

He said: "The chase went on for 10-12 minutes. It started on Halifax Road, I saw it at the end.

"The lad went into the hospital car park and wrecked the barrier."

Mr Arslan, who family runs a property business in the area, thought the car must have been speeding before the crash and the driver lost control on a bend.

"The air ambulance landed on the cricket field. Two people were taken out of the car.

"One was put on a stretcher."

He thought that after about 10-15 minutes, one went in the air ambulance and one in a land ambulance but Yorkshire Air Ambulance said today that both casualties were taken by land ambulance to Leeds General Infirmary.

The road was closed late into the night but was open again as normal today.

A police statement issued last night said that the incident happened at 8.47pm and involved a Honda Civic which collided with two parked vehicles.

The occupants of the Civic were taken to hospital with one of them in a serious condition.

High Street was closed at its junctions with Bath Road and Church Lane.

Due to the nature of the incident the police said it had been referred to the Independent Office for Police Conduct.

Any witnesses to the incident are asked to call police on 101 quoting log 1787 of Wednesday, February 5.

A spokesperson for Yorkshire Ambulance Service said: "We received a call to reports of a road traffic collision at 8.48pm on Wednesday, 5 February, 2020, on High Street in Heckmondwike.

"We dispatched two ambulances, two rapid response vehicles, a team leader from the Hazardous Area Response Team and an air ambulance to the scene.

"Two patients were taken by road ambulance to Leeds General Infirmary."

A spokesperson for West Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service said that firefighters were called to reports of a road traffic incident on the High Street at 8.53pm.

One car, described as a small vehicle, was involved and one person was trapped.

Firefighters extracated them and passed them to paramedics.

Two appliances from Dewsbury attended.
