A serious crash prompted a large response from emergency services last night (Wednesday) and left a road closed into the early hours of this morning.

Police and firefighters could be seen in High Street, Heckmondwike, which had been closed since around 9pm.

Police are yet to release details, but there are suggestions that a car crashed into several parked cars and possibly collided with a building.

The air ambulance was called to the scene, according to onlookers, and is said to have landed on a nearby cricket field.

Police put a large cordon in place while investigations continued.

The incident happened near High Street's junction with Bath Road.

At around 11.30pm, police said the road was likely to remain closed into the night.

Footage posted on social media appeared to show at least one person being stretchered to a waiting ambulance. Reports suggested two people may have been injured.

Speculation has been mounting on Facebook about the severity of the injuries, but nothing had been confirmed by police at 12.30am on Thursday.
