A ROAD in a new housing development could be named after the late former leader of Bradford Council.

Fletcher Lane in Bolton Woods could soon be re-named in recognition of Councillor Ian Greenwood, who died in late 2018.

The street is part of a development of 40 houses off Livingstone Road being carried out by social housing provider Incommunities.

The organisation suggested that the street be re-named after the long service public servant, and on Wednesday members of Bradford Council’s Shipley Area Committee will decide whether to agree to the name change.

The road used to lead to a flats building which has since been demolished, and it will now lead to eight of the homes that make up the development.

Former Bradford Council leader Ian Greenwood has been described as "one of Bradford's finest public servants"

When it meets in Bingley Town Hall, the committee will be asked to approve the re-naming of the street to either Ian Greenwood Way or Greenwood Way.

Cllr Greenwood died after a short illness in November 2018 aged 68. He had a career in local politics spanning four decades.

Cllr Greenwood was twice leader of Bradford Council, and represented Little Horton ward as a Labour councillor from 1995 to 2012. He returned to the Council in May 2018 year to represent Bolton and Undercliffe ward.

He had previously served as a county councillor on West Yorkshire County Council, and was also on dozens of panels on Bradford Council and West Yorkshire Combined Authority.

In 2013 he was awarded the OBE for services to local government.

After his death current Council Leader Susan Hinchcliffe said: “This is an enormous loss to Bradford District.

“For a generation, Ian was possibly the most recognisable and certainly one of the most influential figures in Bradford politics.

“He was immensely proud to be able to serve the people of his home city which he loved dearly and he wore his passion for the place and its people like a badge of honour.”

Kris Hopkins, former Keighley MP and Council Leader said: “Ian’s reputation and sphere of influence also stretched far beyond Bradford and West Yorkshire.

“We had our political differences but I never doubted his motivation in fighting for what he believed in.

“He was one of Bradford’s finest public servants.”

If the committee choose not to name the street after Cllr Greenwood, it will remain Fletcher Lane.

In recent years Bradford Council have named roads after local soldiers who have been killed int he line of duty and pioneering women from the city.
