A NEW city centre market in Bradford city centre will be named Darley Street Market.

Last year Bradford Council asked the public what name they preferred for the new market, on the former Marks and Spencer site on Darley Street.

Today the Council has revealed that 1,200 people had a say on the plans, with over half choosing Darley Street Market.

The other option, Bradford Market, gained 20 per cent. The remaining responses suggested a "broad range of different names" - according to the Council. These names have not yet been revealed.

The £21 million market is due to open in 2022. Once it does Oastler Market will be closed and demolished to make way for a new "city village" housing development, and Kirkgate Market, mased in the Kirkgate Shopping Centre, will also close.

A statement released today said: "The council believes ‘Darley Street Market’ adds some marketing benefits including clearly signalling its location for visitors to the city.

"The name also draws on the heritage of Bradford’s historic high street."

Council names Kier as developer for new Darley Street market

Councillor Alex Ross-Shaw, Portfolio Holder, Regeneration, Planning and Transport, said: “The markets have a special place for so many Bradford residents and therefore it’s was very important for us to consult with as many people across the Bradford district.

“We want residents to be involved in the new market project and what better way than to decide on the name for the new market.

“Darley Street Market was the overwhelming favourite as people made clear they wanted a name that was direct, celebrated the heritage of the street and gave a clear indication as to its location.

“We are fully committed to delivering the extensive reconstruction of the markets offer in the city centre and this is another step in creating a space that not only offers an innovative shopping experience, but also a place that the local community feels belongs to them .”

The main contractor selected for the project has also been announced this week with the work being awarded to Kier Construction.
