People are being warned about the dangers of leaving electrical appliances on standby after a television overheated and exploded.

The explosion caused extensive damage to an attic bedroom and severe smoke damage to the upper floors of a house in Bradford Road, Shipley.

Firefighters from Shipley and Idle were called to the scene shortly after 3.20pm today.

Steve Farley, watch manager at Shipley Fire Station, said: "People should not leave televisions on standby all day. This one was probably defective, but the incident shows what can happen.

"The occupier, who was a man in his mid 30s, was downstairs when he heard a loud bang from upstairs, which was the TV exploding. He did the right thing and shut the door then called the fire service."
