JANUARY 1962 Bradford’s citizens had been warned to keep calm after six suspected cases of smallpox had been reported at various local hospitals.
With two deaths, and five child patients under observation all visitors had been barred from Bradford’s Children’s Hospital and St. Luke’s. Even the Town Hall’s switchboard operators remained on duty throughout the night to deal with the constant stream of calls.
Following the scare, hundreds of people made their way into the city centre to attend a vaccination clinic set up in the grand surroundings of St George’s Hall.
