A debt-counselling service has re-opened in Bradford under new management and is offering free advice to people struggling under the burden of debt.

The Christians Against Poverty (CAP) service formerly operated for two years in the city but was forced to shut when the manager left. It is now operational again in East Bowling under the management of Kate Kelly who is a former client of the centre.

David Maxfield, CAP's head of centre development, said: "I am delighted that CAP is able to continue to offer our vital service in Bradford. Kate is a fantastic debt counsellor. She is very approachable and compassionate, and is keen to see those struggling under the burden of debt discover the hope of a debt-free future."

Working in partnership with St John's Church in Bowling, Miss Kelly is able to offer a practical sustainable solution to anyone who is suffering as a result of overwhelming debts and financial difficulties.

The consequences can include feeling helpless and alone, divorce, eviction, going hungry and even suicide, not to mention the stress generated by collectors at the door, threats of court action.

Instead of offering a short-term solution of cash donations, CAP works with families and negotiates with creditors to work out a realistic budget which prioritises food and essential bills to ensure they will be debt free within five years.

The CAP also provides clients with an Account and Insolvency Service. The CAP Account acts as a simple bank account to help people pay their priority debts and the Insolvency Service provides a solution to those who even with careful budgeting would be facing a life sentence of debt repayments.

Miss Kelly said: "I love my new job. Having first-hand experience of what it feels like to be in debt is a definite advantage.

"Sometimes people can feel quite ashamed and can be very isolated and lonely. There is a lot of stigma attached to being in debt. I can feel the relief when I tell people I have been in the same boat and that there is a way out for them."
