Fire crews in Bradford were called to a serious road accident in Valley Road at around 2am today.
The crash happened when a Peugeot 306 struck a telegraph post close to the Tescos supermarket.
A spokesman for the Fire and Rescue Service said the vehicle was almost cut in half by the force of the impact.
The male driver of the vehicle, believed to be in his late twenties, had to be cut from the wreckage and was taken to Bradford Royal Infirmary by paramedics.
He suffered severe injuries in the crash.
