PUPILS at a Bradford primary school have done their bit to help spruce up the city by taking part in a litter pick.

Every child at St Stephen's Primary School, West Bowling, spent 30 minutes picking litter in the area and in the school grounds earlier this week.

This coincided with Bradford 4 Better’s Big Clean and the school teamed up with Together We Can – a partnership between St Stephen’s Church and Madni Masjid.

Deputy Head Tim Elcock said: "Our aim is to encourage pupils to take action on litter.

"We know that families are fed up with it, and we want children to understand that they are not powerless, but can be advocates for change.

"Our hope is that in the future, litter picking will be a thing of the past.

"As well as picking it up, we are encouraging children to think about the causes of litter, and what we can all do to prevent people from dropping it in the first place."

Rev Hannah Raitt from St Stephen’s Church and Together We Can said: "As Together We Can, we want to see everyone in the community working together to keep our streets clean, so it was really good to work with the children, and seeing them get excited about the difference that can make."

When asked what they would like to say to litter-droppers, children in Year 6 said: "Think about the next generation. Please pick up litter and put it in the bin."
