COUNCILLORS have approved a £33,000 road safety scheme to tackle speeding on a busy Bradford junction.

Three speed "plateaus" will be constructed at the mini roundabout where Allerton Road meets Pearson Lane after the proposals were voted through by members of Bradford Council's Bradford West Area Committee on Wednesday evening.

They had been told that in the past five years there had been five crashes at the junction, resulting in eight injuries.

A report by highways officers said: "The road injury record and measurements of vehicle speeds indicate that significant measures are required for the safety of local people and all the road users on Allerton Road junction with Pearson Lane."

Two people had objected to the plans, including West Yorkshire Combined Authority - which said bus drivers had raised concerns that travelling over the speed plateaus would lead to back pain.

But no objectors attended Wednesday's meeting, and the plans were swiftly approved.
