A NEW memorial to climber Ian Clough is to be created in his home town Baildon once the Ian Clough Hall has been demolished.

Bradford Council have said that they are working with Baildon Town Council to create another memorial with the town council planning to mark the 50th anniversary of Mr Clough's death on May 30, 1970 at the age of 33.

A Bradford Council spokesperson, said: “We are working in partnership with Baildon Town Council, to redevelop the site. The Partnership Board met on the 11th November and it was agreed that there should be another memorial in the future.

“Baildon Town Council will facilitate the recovery of any of the current signage and if requested would consider donating this to the family or for re-use in a new community facility if appropriate.

“Baildon Town Council are also in the process of planning an event to mark the 50th anniversary of Ian Clough’s death with details to be announced.”

Mr Clough was climbing with Sir Chris Bonington on his Annapurna expedition when he was killed by a falling ice pillar.

Sir Chris has attended previous events in memory of Mr Clough but had so far not been approached about any event in May.

Sir Chris said: "I haven’t been approached but of course Ian was a close friend with whom I did some of my most important climbs - Central Pillar of Freney, Walker Spur of the Grande Jorrasse with the Rocheforte Ridge, North Wall of Eiger and our expedition to the Central Tower of Paine.

"He was a brilliant climber and one of the most warm hearted, generous, modest, unselfish people I have ever had the privilege to know."
