FEARS have been raised that road safety measures at a Bradford junction could cause back pain for bus drivers.

Bradford Council has proposed installing raised speed tables on the three roads leading to the mini roundabout where Pearson Lane meets Allerton Road.

There have been five crashes at the junction in the past five years, leading to eight injuries.

Highways officers have said: "The road injury record and measurements of vehicle speeds indicate that significant measures are required for the safety of local people and all the road users on Allerton Road junction with Pearson Lane."

But West Yorkshire Combined Authority has objected to the plans on behalf of local bus companies.

They fear that by regularly passing over the raised plateaus, bus drivers may suffer back pain.

A second objection has been received from a resident, who claims there are "no concerns" about the junction, and they are not aware of any crashes there.

Members of Bradford Council's Bradford West Area Committee will decide whether to go ahead with the works at a meeting being held in City Hall at 6pm on Wednesday.

Officers have recommended that the proposals, which will cost around £33,000, be approved.

They add: "A failure to implement highway safety improvements would

result in ongoing concerns about the road collision rate on this section of Allerton Road and Pearson Lane."
