Youngsters are being given the chance to autograph a book - along with the author - about Keighley's hidden history, which they helped devise.

The 500 children who researched the stories for the book called Ten Brilliant Schools Heritage Trails written by Aire Valley historian Malcolm Hanson, are invited to its launch on Saturday.

It will take place at Reids Bookshop in Cavendish Street, Keighley, between 2pm and 3pm.

The book was funded by "sportKeighley" and is designed to encourage people to take more exercise and learn about the Worth valley and upper Aire valley at the same time.

Mr Hanson has been working with schools over the last three years building up the ten walks.

He said: "The children helped me write it so it's only fair they should be given the opportunity to share the limelight by jointly signing copies sold on the day.

"Some of the children will have moved on to other schools by now so I'm hoping their parents will arrange for them to come along. I don't want any children to miss out."

He said the book had already sparked widespread interest following news of its launch in the Telegraph & Argus.

The trails were put together by St Anne's RC School Keighley, Our Lady of Victories RC school and Braithwaite School, Keighley, Nessfield primary, Keighley, Denholme primary, Cowling primary, Eastburn primary, Sutton primary and Oakworth primary.

The walks focus on characters of the past 100 years, such as Old Three Laps, who, jilted by his sweetheart, went to bed for 49 years with a broken heart.

Also featured is Christopher Ingham, a hero of the Penisular War who fought at Waterloo and was honoured for his bravery and is buried in Utley Cemetery, Keighley.

The book is on sale at £5.99 and Mr Hanson has waived rights to royalties in favour of any profits eventually going back to the schools.

Copies can also be ordered by telephoning (01756) 709275.
