MUSICAL satirist Mitch Benn will be offering songs ‘to save the world’ in Otley next month.

The BBC Radio 4 stalwart will be performing at the Courthouse from 8pm on Saturday, February 1.

The show, entitled Ten Songs to Save the World, sees Benn - with guitar in hand - talking about some of the biggest problems facing us today: and proposing a string of semi-serious solutions.

As well as starring in BBC Radio 4’s Now Show for more than a decade, the comedian has also presented a number of radio specials.

Following on from the success of Mitch Benn Is The 37th Beatle, a further three specials on music icons Bob Dylan, David Bowie and Elvis have also been broadcast - The Freewheelin’ Mitch Benn, Mitch Benn Is The Fat Pink Duke and Mitch Benn Has Left The Building.

He also co-presented BBC Radio 2’s Anatomy Of A Guitar with Harry Shearer and presented Spank The Plank for BBC Radio 4.

And his television appearances have included a spot on Celebrity Mastermind, which he went on to win.

Benn is also the author of two novels, Terra and Terra’s World, which are both published by Gollancz and is the co-author, with Jon Holmes, of The Twitter History Of The World’.

He has performed at several music festivals and at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe, and released seven studio albums.

His current stand-up show has been praised for spreading ‘insight and laughs in great measure’.

Tickets cost £15.

Star Wars fans, meanwhile, can look forward to a screening at the Courthouse which gives an insight into the British actor who portrayed Darth Vader in the original trilogy.

Light Side: A Journey with David Prowse will be shown at the venue at 7pm on Thursday, January 16. The new documentary, which features rare and exclusive access to Prowse, aims to shine a new light on a celebrated career.

Besides playing one of the most iconic screen villains in cinema history - Prowse physically portrayed Vader while the character’s voice was performed by James Earl Jones - the Bristol-born actor also featured in Stanley Kubrick’s A Clockwork Orange and trained Christopher Reeve for 1978’s Superman.

He was awarded an MBE in 2000 for his contribution to road safety awareness through his work as the Green Cross Code Man.

Tickets for Light Side cost £7.50 and can be booked by visiting www.otleycourthouse.org.uk, calling (01943) 467466 or popping into the Courthouse.
