THERE are strong calls for improved road safety measures on a stretch of road where two serious accidents involving pedestrians have happened in less than a month.

At 7.20pm on Sunday, police received reports that a 39-year-old man had sustained serious head injuries on the B6265 Bradford Road, in Cottingley, Bingley, near Grange Park Drive.

A police spokesperson said the driver of the vehicle involved, a grey Peugeot 2008, stopped after the collision and was spoken to by police, while the road remained closed until 1am.

When asked for an update on the man’s condition late yesterday afternoon, West Yorkshire Police did not provide one.

The incident occurred on the very same section of road where, in December, a 17-year-old girl was killed after she was hit by a car.

Ishah Riaz, a sixth form student at Beckfoot School, a stone’s throw from where the collision happened, was pronounced dead in hospital on December 12.

A 65-year-old man was later arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving.

More widely in Cottingley, there have been concerns over road safety.

On the same day as the fatal collision in December, in a separate incident, a man as well as a woman were taken to hospital following another crash, near Cottingley Village Primary School, just over a mile away from Beckfoot School.

Councillor Naveed Riaz, of the Bingley Rural ward, said he wants to speak to Bradford Council’s highways department about the road safety issues on Bradford Road.

Councillor Riaz said: “I’m trying to make contact with the highways department regarding Bradford Road.

“We had the death of Ishah, and her family are devastated. We have to act now rather than later.

“We have a desperate need for speed calming measures.

“Unfortunately, whether these measures are implemented or not isn’t in my hands, but once we have this discussion, the area will hopefully benefit.

“We also have to thank the air ambulance crew who provide a reliable service and don’t always get the recognition for it.”

Cottingley resident Mike Ramplin said: “Last night’s crash was in the exact same place where Ishah Riaz was killed.

“It is also where Bradford Council are considering approving 155 new homes, which will turn the area into an even busier rat run.

“The most important thing should be safety. There are schools and nurseries in this area. I’m very concerned about accidents.”
