A FAMILY managed to escape from a fire through a first-floor window after the blaze trapped them today.

The fire broke out in a storage shed on Foldings Avenue, Scholes, near Wyke, at around 11:50am this morning.

A family of six in a nearby flat had to escape through their window as the ground-floor exit was blocked by the blaze, according to a West Yorkshire Fire & Rescue Service (WYFRS) spokesperson.

The father of the family got out of the flat first, by lowering himself out of the window.

His partner then passed their three children and dog down to him.

The children range in age between two and nine.

Fire crews from Cleckheaton and Odsal tackled the blaze and were able to put it out before it spread inside the building.

There was damage to the electrics outside the block of flats, some downstairs windows, and the front door.

The brick storage shed, where the fire began, was also damaged.

Police and paramedics were at the scene too.

It is not known what started the fire.
