Bradford people interested in using their spare time to do more than just sit in front of the telly during these dark winter nights are being invited to take up a unique challenge to help beat cancer.

Cancer Research UK is looking for volunteers in the area to organise one of its unique series of Relay For Life events, part of the biggest fundraising event in the world.

Relay For Life brings together the whole community in a 24-hour festival of hope and remembrance to celebrate the strides being made to beat cancer and to raise funds to conquer the disease.

As part of the event, teams of people from all sections of the community take turns to walk, run, skip or crawl around a track in a relay following an opening 'Lap of Honour' by cancer survivors. At dusk the atmosphere quietens as the Candle of Hope Ceremony begins.

The charity wants people from all walks of life to sign up and comprehensive training and support will be given.

Cancer Research UK Area volunteer manager for Bradford, Jamie Strachan, said: "We would love to establish a Relay For Life in the area and enable Bradford to proudly be part of the world's biggest fundraising event.

"Being an organising chair for Relay For Life is hard work and requires passion and commitment, but the sense of achievement is simply awesome."
