An 85-year-old woman was left startled after using her walking stick to ward off a man climbing through her kitchen window.

She was at home in the Fagley Road area of Fagley, Bradford, at about 9.25pm yesterday when she heard someone shouting hello.

On entering the kitchen she saw a man climbing though a window who when challenged jumped back outside and fled the premises.

The man was described as white, aged between 20 and 22, with brown hair, a pinkish fresh face and was wearing a pinkish long sleeved button-through shirt and grey denim jeans.

Detective Inspector Noel Devine, of Bradford North Police, said: "The woman was badly shaken; it is a shocking incident that someone is prepared to break into a property, knowing people might be home.

"We need people's help to track down the culprit, and we are aware that there were a number of bonfire parties in the area. Anyone who witnessed the incident or who may have seen someone in the area around 9.25pm are asked to call Bradford North Police on (01274) 376275."
