Plans to turn inner-city Usher Street Primary into an annexe of another school are set to take one step forward next week.

Bradford Council's executive is being asked to approve the publication of notices to enlarge Bowling Park by closing Usher Street and creating one three-form entry school based across both sites.

Informal consultations have been held with parents, governors and the wider community about the proposals.

Usher Street was only saved from closure at the beginning of this year after a hard-fought battle by parents. But the school has suffered from falling pupil numbers and has been in special measures for four years.

It is hoped the annexe plan will help attract an experienced headteacher after difficulties attracting staff. Usher Street is overseen by an executive head teacher - Kevin Holland head at Green Lane Primary - but this arrangement is due to finish at the end of this year.

If the executive agrees when it meets on Tuesday and objections are received they will be asked to make a decision at its meeting in January. If the closure of Usher Street and expansion of Bowling Park are agreed, the newly-expanded school would open on September 1, 2008.
