A staggering £75,000 was raised in only a few hours to help build a hospital in earthquake-hit Kashmir.

Guests at the event at Bradford City's Valley Parade stadium pledged sums ranging from tens of pounds up to thousands in aid of the Midland Doctors Association UK (MDAUK).

The group plans to build the hospital near Muzaffarabad, an area still struggling to recover from the devastating quake two years ago which killed 87,000 people.

The glittering event, hosted by Councillor Rizwan Malik and Ishtiaq Mir, was organised by local businesses and individuals and saw hundreds of people coming together from across Bradford and the district and further afield.

Among the crowd were the Lord Mayor of Bradford, Councillor Robin Owens, and the Lady Mayoress of Bradford, Janet Owens, Baroness Warsi of Dewsbury and Lord Patel of Bradford as well as the Pakistan Consul General Tariq Sumroo.

All the time and costs had been met by the organisers and sponsors so all the money raised on the night will go directly to the fund.

The organisers thanked all those who made the event possible, including the sponsors and guests who gave so generously.

Coun Malik said: "It was a fantastic event which brought together so many diverse people for a common cause."

The charity is being supported by the Telegraph & Argus South Asian Earthquake Appeal and also the Lord Mayor of Bradford's Kashmir Earthquake Appeal Trust.
