TRIBUTES have been paid to a Mansfield Town supporter, who is reported to have passed away after the club’s visit to Bradford City on Sunday.

On Sunday evening, shortly after the game, it was reported that the fan had suffered a heart attack, believed to have happened close to Midland Road and Manningham Lane.

On Monday, Mansfield Town’s official Twitter account named the man as Ian Warriner, and described him as a “lifelong supporter” of the club.

Mansfield Police Football, a Twitter account run by a dedicated football officer for Mansfield Town, tweeted on Sunday at 6.15pm, “Thoughts are with the @mansfieldtownfc fan who collapsed after the game. Thanks to colleagues at @WestYorksPolice @YorksAmbulance and @YorkshireAirAmb for their quick response.”

Three and a half hours later, the same account tweeted, “Condolences to the family and friends of a fellow #Stag who tragically passed away this evening following today’s game. You are in our thoughts and prays.”

Other tributes read, “A Mansfield Town fan sadly passed away on the way home from Bradford yesterday”, and “Our thoughts and prayers are with the family and friends of the Mansfield Town fan who collapsed at today’s game.”

One eyewitness told the Telegraph & Argus that an air ambulance was called to the scene, while another reported that there had been a serious incident near the city centre.

On Monday, Mansfield Town tweeted “Mansfield Town Football Club is deeply saddened to learn of the passing of lifelong supporter Ian Warriner.

Ian sadly passed away following yesterday’s match at @officialbantams We send our deepest condolences to Ian’s family at this very sad time."

Following this, Bradford City tweeted “Our thoughts and prayers are with Ian’s family and friends - and everyone at @mansfieldtownfc - at this difficult time. Rest in peace.”

Another City supporter tweeted, “RIP to the Mansfield fan who died of a heart attack after the game today, nobody should go to a game and not come home. Sending thoughts to the family and the club. Condolences from the bantam family #stags #mtfc #bcafc.”

Adam Baker, vice-chair of Bradford City Supporters Board, said, “Someone going to a football match and not returning home should never be the case.

“Our thoughts go out to the Mansfield Town supporter who sadly passed away and to his family, friends and everyone who knew him.

“Things like this really puts football into perspective. It puts any kind of sporting rivalry to one side and it sees the wider football community come together.

“It’s especially sad because at this time of year, family and friends always come together.”

A Bradford City club spokesperson said, “We are all deeply saddened to hear about the Mansfield Town supporter who passed away after Sunday’s game and our thoughts go out to his family and friends.

“We believe the supporter suffered a cardiac arrest. The authorities and ambulance crew responded very quickly and we have to thank them for their efforts.

“This shows that there are much more important things than football.”
