A KITTEN was found alive and safe after reports that it was spotted in the middle of Stanningley bypass, West Yorkshire Police Contact Management Centre tweeted this morning.

In the tweet, it is revealed that the person who made the call to the authorities used 'What3words' - a smartphone app which allows police to pinpoint the exact location of an incident.

The developers of What3words divided the world into 57 trillion squares, each measuring 3m by 3m (10ft by 10ft), with each square assigned a unique and random three-word address, allowing for emergency services to see, precisely, where a report is coming from.

The tweet, published by @WYP_Contact at 8.31am today, reads: "Reports of a kitten in the middle of Stanningley Bypass and the caller used @what3words. We arrived on scene and pin point on the 3 words used we found a little kitten and he is alive. #GreatWork"

Insp Mark Gamlyn of West Yorkshire Police later tweeted, at 9.09am, that the kitten was on its way to the vets to be "checked over."
