A BRADFORD WOMAN who was the victim of a hit-and-run returned home on Saturday night, after being hospitalised.

Victoria Exley, 54, was walking her dog Archie on Harrogate Road, where she lives with her husband Gary Exley, 55, when she was struck by a car while crossing the traffic lights in Greengates.

The incident took place at around 8pm on Friday, and Mr Exley rushed to the scene to find his wife face down, covered with blankets and surrounded by a pool of blood.

She was taken to Leeds General Infirmary and returned home on Saturday, although Mr Exley says she is "covered in bruises and very sore."

He says she was crossing the lights in Greengates to go towards Calverley, when the car hit her: "A car came from Calverley and turned right and just carried on and mowed her over. I think it stopped briefly and then carried on and went down to Apperley Bridge."

"You don't know how bad it's going to be. You just think the worst case scenario", Mr. Exley said.

Pictures taken of Mrs. Exley at Leeds General Infirmary show her injuries - "all the blood was coming out of her nose," her husband said.

Mr. Exley described the driving as "reckless" and said his wife was feeling angry over the situation: "It's something that should not have happened. Luckily, it's not as bad as what it could have been, but it's still going to affect our Christmas.

"We want the culprit to be caught and dealt with."

Mr. Exley also claims that "the main camera" at the traffic lights is not working: "Cameras are put in place for things like this, so the fact the main one isn't working is disappointing and it's blown everything out of the water. Hopefully the other cameras are working and can assist the police."

Mr. Exley hopes that his wife's situation, although upsetting, can bring to light issues regarding how "dangerous" the area is.

"It's a bad way to highlight it, but I hope this can bring attention to the problems we face as locals. It's a very busy place. It has become too gridlocked and it's overloaded with traffic which is a contributing factor to a lot of incidents that happen here regularly.

"There aren't enough pedestrian zones here and, considering there's a school nearby, that's quite disturbing. It's a glaring anomaly.

Mr. Exley says he has experienced several "different emotions" in a short space of time, saying, "I've felt shock, fatigue and anger".

Police said it is being treated as a fail-to-stop collision, and a West Yorkshire Police spokesperson said, on Saturday, "Emergency services attended Harrogate Road in Bradford at about 7.57pm on Friday night following a collision between a woman and a car.

"The woman suffered a facial injury and was treated at the scene by paramedics. She was taken to hospital where it was confirmed the injuries were not life threatening.

"Enquiries into the collision remain ongoing and anyone who saw what occurred is asked to contact the Western area Roads Policing Unit on 101 referencing police log number 1753 of December 20. Information can also be given online at www.westyorkshire.police.uk/101livechat."

When asked today, West Yorkshire Police said there were no updates to be made on the incident at the time, and did not give an updated statement.
