CROWS swirl above a dry stone wall, a remote cottage catches the evening light, two sheep stand to attention amid a carpet of heather.

Brighouse-based artist Daniel Abrahams has captured the stark beauty of our moorlands in paint.

Blankets of heather in vibrant purple, well-trodden tracks, big skies - all are here in his new collection Majestic Moorland.

Known for his atmospheric landscapes, townscapes and sporting scenes, Danny has taken inspiration from the vistas on his doorstep to create his eye-catching works. “I’ve sought to capture the raw beauty of our wonderful heather moorlands under the vast moody skies that we so often see in this part of the world,” he says. “How can you not be inspired by the beauty of our local landscapes such as the moors around Haworth with their rugged, windswept and very much enchanted feel? Throughout autumn the array of colours and natural beauty on the moors is quite amazing, and when the heather is in full bloom - it is quite a sight.”

He adds: “There’s an endless array of subtle changes in every scene, whether it be a lonely sheep making an appearance or a crumbling drystone wall that has a story all to itself, the trickling streams, weathered trees and old stone cottages - at every turn there’s a new idea to create art.”

An accomplished musician, Danny, who grew up in Wibsey, attending Yorkshire Martyrs school, played guitar in a rock band The Hooverdams, which saw some success, before turning his attention to art.

His new collection will run alongside his popular landscape series featuring childhood memories and scenes of young love which are exhibited in galleries throughout the country. He tries to keep a ‘magical’ , dream-like element to his artwork. “I am hoping the trend continues with my new collection.”

Working as a full time artist from his home studio feels like a dream come true. “As long as the passion is there and the ideas keep flowing, I’m a happy man knowing that my creations are making people happy, rekindling old memories and bringing a bit of colour to their walls,” he says.

As well as his new moorland collection, many of Danny’s landscapes are unmistakably Yorkshire - sweeping valleys dotted with barns, towering mill chimneys, cheek-by-jowl terraces. He draws inspiration in particular from Bradford. “The industrial roots of Bradford are often displayed in my work, whether it be a chimney or a mill town. Bradford is unique and inspiring because of the contrast of vast open green areas and the industrial city.

“Everything about the Yorkshire landscape inspires me, from rolling hills to cobbled streets. When I’m not painting I’m likely to be found walking in the Dales, taking in the changing moods and colours.”

Majestic Moorland is available at Smart Gallery, Chapel Allerton, Leeds; Pomfret Gallery, Pontefract; Acorn Gallery, Pocklington; Cheshire Art Gallery, Stockport.

“They will be making their way into other galleries in early 2020, so keep an eye out,” he says. Helen Mead
