COUNCILLORS could approve a new strategy aimed at delivering a green new future for the district’s housing needs next week
“A place to call home, a place to thrive, housing strategy for Bradford District, 2020-2030” will be considered by Bradford Council’s Executive when it meets in City Hall on January 2.
The strategy aims to help develop homes and neighbourhoods which are sensitive to future environmental, demographic and technological changes and emphasises important contributions housing will make to the council’s carbon emissions commitments.
The strategy encourages developers, architects and other partners to sign up to high quality design standards for new and existing homes so partners can create ‘green, safe, inclusive and distinct neighbourhoods.’
The document contains guidelines on how to build attractive homes and neighbourhoods, and informs developers on how to create more inclusive houses. It encourages the uptake of electrical vehicles by requiring all new homes to have a charging point with a view to improving air quality. The strategy includes measures to ensure all new properties are energy efficient and adaptable, and ideas on how to encourage active travel such as walking and cycling.
It also requires housing to be connected to good transport networks, with easy access to employment and well served by public services.
The new strategy focuses on providing more homes and affordable homes.
Councillor Alex Ross-Shaw, Portfolio Holder for Regeneration, Planning and Transport, said: “Housing plays an important and central role in people’s health and wellbeing, and impacts the environment so it is critical everyone works together to get this right.
“We believe everyone has the right to live in a good quality home and this strategy sets out how we will work with partners to make this happen.”
