Firefighters stopped a kitchen fire getting out of control after a firework was discovered alight on the floor.
A crew from Odsal was attending a small rubbish fire on the next street when they were called to a house fire in Boynton Street, West Bowling, Bradford, with a report of people inside at around 9pm yesterday.
They found the door locked so they broke it down. Although no one was home, the house was full of smoke.
Flames had spread from a lit firework on the kitchen floor to a door, the linoleum flooring and a pile of rubbish in a corner.
The fire was isolated to the room by firefighters using breathing apparatus and it was extinguished in an hour.
Crew manager Ben Bush said: "We suspect the firework was pushed through the letterbox - it's totally unacceptable.
"Luckily we were nearby and arrived within a minute. If there had been someone asleep inside and we would have had to come from the station it could have been fatal."
