MORE than 200 drivers have already been arrested this Christmas for drink and drug-driving.

West Yorkshire Police's Roads Policing Unit (RPU) has expressed its disappointment at the figures.

Since the start of December, 202 drivers in West Yorkshire have been arrested for drink or drug-driving.

On Saturday, December 14, that total sat at 169.

It means an increase of nearly 20 per cent just over the weekend and into this week.

A police spokesperson said: "We have more roads policing officers working on the roads of West Yorkshire to prevent the devastation that drink or drug driving can cause.

"Don't take the risk."

The force is also running a campaign this Christmas to target drink and drug-drivers.

There is increased enforcement activity on the county's roads and officers are taking every opportunity to remind people of the potentially fatal consequences of the crime.

The penal punishments include prison time, an unlimited fine, and a driving ban.
