Wibsey RUFC falls victim to arson attack on storage container

These shocking pictures show the extent of the damage at Wibsey Rugby Club lock up on the Northfield Road playing fields. 

The torched lock up

Both the fire brigade and police were called to the scene. It's thought the fire happened at around 5am. 

Essential kit like tackle pads, post protectors and a scrum machine were all kept in the container, as well as things used for fun days and barbecue equipment. 

Steve Brooke, chairman of Wibsey Rugby Union, spoke of his anger.

He said: "It's an absolute disgrace, it's shocking.

"I don't know how they've got in - it was all padlocked up.

"Fortunately we don't have any home games this week, otherwise we'd have to cancel them.

"Luckily, we didn't have any gas canisters, otherwise it could have been an absolute disaster."

He estimated the cost of the damage of around £20,000 - if not more. Scrum machines alone cost around £5,000.

Mr Brooke added: "It's just an absolute disgrace - they just ruin it for everyone.

"I just don't understand the mentality."

The club is run by volunteers and is currently in the process of trying to get an asset transfer to create a community hub for the benefit of the village, but Mr Brooke said there is a nervousness about putting changing rooms on the field.

The club is now appealing for anyone with CCTV to get in touch. 

West Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service confirmed firefighters from Odsal were called to the scene and requested the attendance of police.

A spokesperson for West Yorkshire Police said the fire is being treated as arson and enquiries are ongoing.
