Oswestry-based boxers are set to represent their club at an international level when they travel abroad later this week.

Boxers from the Maelor Amateur Boxing Club (ABC) will compete against fighters from various countries when they take part in the Odivelas Box Cup in Lisbon, Portugal, this week.

The tournament takes place over the weekend, with members of the club set to fly to Portugal on Thursday, before returning on Monday.

It is the first time the Maelor ABC has taken a team to the tournament, which welcomes teams from across the world.

David Jones, boxing coach at Maelor ABC, said: “All the boys are very excited about going to the tournament.”

“They are looking forward to seeing whether they can come home with a medal both for themselves and for the club.”

Competing at the event will be Leighton Turnbull, Gary Richards, Harry Roberts and Thomas Roberts of St Martins, and Kane Rowbotham and Ethan Finney of Oswestry.

Tom Jones of Froncysyllte and Cory Jones of Rhosllanerchrugog will also compete, with coaches Arron Fitzpatrick and David Jones also on the trip.
