THERE was celebration at a Queensbury nursing home yesterday as a resident marked a very special birthday.

Elsie Baynes, who lives at Park House Nursing Home, turned 100 and was joined by family members and fellow residents to mark the milestone date.

And as is customary, she received a card from the Queen.

Elsie was born on November 28 in East London and was brought up in Barking.

She worked for the Government in central London, until she was evacuated to Cardiff in 1940.

Elsie met her future husband, William Henry Davies, a Lt Commander in the Navy and they married in 1947 in Barking.

They went on to have two sons Richard, in 1950, and Robert in 1953. She also has two stepdaughters, Jane and Joan.

She has one granddaughter, Sarah, and a grandson, Simon.

After many years working, the couple retired to Vancouver.

In 1975, after William passed away, Elsie returned to the UK to live on Halifax Road, Buttershaw.

She then moved to be near her son Robert in Barrow-in-Furness, before moving to Park House, where she is regularly visited by her two grandchildren and four great grandchildren.

Richard said the day had gone "really well" and it had been a nice day.
