A CITY centre bank is due to undergo a major refurbishment to "preserve" the building for future generations.

Barclays Bank has a large branch at 10 Market Street, opposite the Broadway Shopping Centre.

A planning application to refurbish the building has now been submitted to Bradford Council.

The application is for the replacement of the existing flat roof covering, installation of roof top edge, protection, repairs and redecoration of an external staircase, repairs, redecoration or like for like replacement of existing windows and repairs and redecoration or existing guttering.

The planning application says the works will "provide much needed preservation measures for the longevity of the existing building.

Approval for new city centre bank in former Five Guys restaurant

"These works are also expected to bring improved and fresh aesthetic qualities to the overall appearance of the building."

A decision on the application is expected in the New Year.

A number of banks in the city centre have undergone refurbishments in recent years.

Natwest refurbished its Market Street branch in 2017, while Yorkshire Bank on Broadway underwent a refurbishment earlier this year.

And work is soon to begin on a new bank - Metrobank, in the former Five Guys unit in the Xchange development.
