THERE was plenty to tickle the tastebuds and quench the thirst of Bradfordians in this category.

Indian-themed The Peacock Bar and champions of local produce The Rooftop Cafe were valiant contenders for the award.

Both are vibrant participants in the Bradford bar-restaurant scene, offering something unique to the city’s customers.

The clue is in the name with The Rooftop Cafe, which overlooks Bradford Cathedral.

While The Peacock Bar offers authentic, traditional Indian street food, all washed down with a variety of refreshing drinks.

But there was much applause when the golden envelope revealed Pizza Pieces was the winner.

Loveable married duo and owners, Antonio and Margherita Barbiero, made their way to the stage with the former providing a comic speech for the audience.

Awards host Harry Gration said he would always remember Mr Barbiero for the humourous comments he made on collecting his award.

The restaurant - which also offers take-outs - has an impressive 4.5 stars out of five rating on Trip Advisor.

It is the heart of the place that strikes a chord most with the public and the family-owned business has been running in Bradford for more than quarter of a century.

The original Pizza Pieces ran on the corner of Bank Street from 1993, before moving to its current premises in Market Street, in 2005.

Mr Barbiero said: “We’re delighted, very happy and the reason for that, there’s got to be a reason, what it is, we do look after the customers and also the price is good as well.

“We run as a family business and that’s our success, looking after every customer that comes in our shop.”

The owner admits you have to be a “larger-than-life” character in order to last in Bradford, something his wife testifies with.

Mrs Barbiero said: “He’s like a comedian. He’s a lovely man, I love him so much, and we’ve been married for 45 years.

“I can’t live without him.”

The couple live in Huddersfield, but travel to Bradford every day to fire up the pizza ovens and say they love the city. Both said: “We just want to say thank you to all the people that voted for us, all our customers, everybody – just thank you very much.”
