In 1978, major alterations had been carried out at the Plush Silk and Textile Club, better known as The Pile Bar, in Lilycroft Road. The capacity of the main concert hall had been increased from 180 to 420 seats, the nearby lounge had been extended to make room for 30 extra people and the games room now had space for two snooker tables instead of one.

The official opening of the extension was restricted to members only, with a cabaret programme that featured comedian Joe Belcher, vocal turn Rumpelstiltskin and the popular duo, Garry Ann.
