A BRADFORD school has gone on air with its own media suite complete with a radio station, cameras and green screen.

The facilities have officially been opened at Carrwood Primary on Eversley Drive, Holme Wood, by former MP Judith Cummins.

She was among the first to be interviewed by the budding reporters as was Pulse Radio programme controller Jacqui Blay.

James Whitehead, teacher and media and technology leader, said: "The intention of this studio is to engage pupils in the use of its equipment to give more purpose to their reading and writing activities.

"We plan to expand from internal news stories to those of local interest within the Bradford community and beyond. Those that engage with this new media studio will hopefully be able to learn skills and develop interests in potential future careers and discover their personal talents for the world of work.

"The News-Cool Studio will be eventually run by pupils and broadcast initially throughout school and its media channels.

"It will help them realise that they can do something."

Mr Whitehead said school staff will take groups of children out into Holme Wood to compile reports.

He said pupils would be able to broadcast from the radio studio to the school via its public address system and beyond via the school's website.

Mr Whitehead said children will able to use the studio to link to learning in class like researching Remembrance Day images. "It is good for their development and get skills that aren't particularly class related."

The equipment and its installation was paid for from the Essential Life Skills fund, part of the Bradford Area of Opportunity scheme.
