THE devastated family of a Bradford man who died in a road traffic collision have issued an emotional plea for all motorists to put safety first, after the other driver involved in the incident was sentenced.

Financial consultant John Fielding, of East Bierley, passed away aged 58 after the Jaguar F-Pace he was driving was struck from behind by another vehicle as he travelled in heavy traffic on the M55 on the evening of November 23, 2018.

His wife Julie, 60, and his step-grandchildren Florence, seven, and Daisy, four, were also in the car and suffered physical and psychological injuries in the incident.

The driver of the other vehicle involved in the crash, Richard Pickering from Leyland, pleaded guilty to causing death by careless driving and in a hearing held at Preston Crown Court today he was given a 12-month jail sentence suspended for six months, and also had his licence revoked for three and a half years.

Following the incident, Julie and her family instructed specialist serious injury lawyers at Irwin Mitchell to help them gain answers and access to specialist care and treatment following the death of John.

Claire Newstead, the legal expert at Irwin Mitchell’s Leeds office who is acting for the family, said: “Just 12 months on from the crash, Julie and her family remain utterly devastated by their loss and are still attempting to come to terms with what happened.

“It is vital that this sentencing acts as a reminder to all road users of the importance of taking care when on the roads. The safety of yourself, other motorists, cyclists and pedestrians should always be carefully considered, as failing to do that can have significant consequences.

“We are continuing to support the family in any way we can.”

John, Julie and the children were heading to St Anne's for the weekend when the incident occurred.

Julie said: “It remains incredibly difficult to think about what happened and it has been a hugely emotional time for the entire family. While I am still coming to terms with losing my husband, our primary concern is supporting Florence and Daisy. We have all gone through something that no one should have to face and it has been so hard.

“It is tough knowing that nothing will change what has happened or bring John back to us. John was hugely loved by everyone who knew him and it is still hard to believe he is gone.

“I would not wish the pain we are all feeling on anyone and would urge that people always do what they can to stay safe on the roads.”

Mr Fielding was a director of Pro-Act Investment Solutions with an office in Cleckheaton.
