A BRADFORD school joined in events to the mark the day the guns fell silent in World War One.

Children at St Matthews C of E Primary School in Mayo Avenue, West Bowling, commemorated the 101st anniversary of Armistice Day today.

Artist Sian Williams has been working with pupils on projects revolving around peace and respect during the term and she organised them to take part in a special piece of land art in the shape of a heart.

Despite the heavens opening just before they formed the shape on the play area at the school, approximately 360 pupils from reception to year five took part in the artwork.

Sian said the heart shape was chosen because the school had been using the heart as a symbol of peace and respect at workshops during the term.

She said: "It was the whole school coming together about peace and respect and how the past link to our future."

She added that the artwork was the first time they had done a piece visible from the air but the children had previously used their creativity on other topics.

"We use different ways to learn and explore, including drama and art, to enhance the school's creativity. St Matthews embraces the use of art."

She used cones to mark out heart shapes but the weather meant things did not go according to plan.

She said: "The rain made the children more excitable and they couldn't sit down."
