TRAFFIC is queueing on the M62 eastbound after an accident involving two cars and two lorries which resulted in a spillage between junctions 29 and 30.

The road was blocked eastbound by the crash at around 4.55pm.

West Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service said that one casualty was trapped and extrication was carried out by fire service personnel. The casualty was transferred to hospital by ambulance.

Appliances from Rothwell, Hunslet and the technical rescue team from Cleckheaton attended.

There are reported delays of about 60 minutes covering several miles of the carriageway back to junction 27 according to Highways England.

Traffic officers and emergency services were working at the scene to reopen the lanes as soon as it is safe.

The vehicles have now been moved to lane one which is closed as a result of the accident, causing delays. The total eastbound carriageway was blocked until around 6.05pm.

A witness to the crash scene said: "It looked very bad - cars and lorries blocking three lanes, various people wandering around looking dazed and one silver car wedged under the back of a lorry with driver's side completely crushed."

Traffic is also queueing on the M1 southbound and the M621 westbound.

Earlier, there were also reports of one lane closed and heavy traffic due to an accident on M62 westbound between junction 27 for Gildersome to junction 26 for Chainbar.
