A LOCAL power boat and two flood vehicles have been sent to aid rescues in Sheffield.

Bingley Fire Station houses specialist emergency vehicles for flooding incidents and crews can be mobilised nationally, if they are required.

Hundreds of people were left stranded in Meadowhall yesterday after torrential rain saw the River Don burst its banks.

Many had travelled there for the annual Christmas Live event, with the likes of Ella Henderson, Tom Zanetti and Jonas Blue due to perform.

But, the event was cancelled as a result of the weather, with several routes around the complex affected by flooding.

On Thursday evening, police announced that the area was completely gridlocked and began to turn trapped motorists back into the centre's massive car parks.

South Yorkshire Police's Operational Support Unit then advised everyone in the centre not to leave and only travel if essential.

The trouble has continued into today, with an amber weather alert still in place from the MET Office.

Bingley Fire Station has been sent to Sheffield as part of a national assistance programme.

A spokesperson for Bingley Fire: "They're assisting with rescuing.

"There's still a threat to life from the River Don.

"So they will probably be there for overtime."
