A WOMAN who was due to get married suffered life-threatening injuries when she was repeatedly stabbed by her jealous uncle, a court heard.

Tasawar Ali, 59, launched a ferocious attack on Monika Sharma at her flat in Bradford after a row started when he asked her not to marry her fiancé.

Prosecutor Michael Greenhalgh said Miss Sharma had described Ali as being “a very jealous person” and when she told him to get out of her home he replied: "I am going to kill you and I’ll go to London and kill him too.”

Bradford Crown Court heard on Thursday that Ali picked up a green-handled knife from a work surface and began to stab the complainant in the neck.

Mr Greenhalgh said Ali then picked up a second knife and stabbed Miss Sharma in the stomach while he had his hand over her mouth to stop her from screaming.

When the complainant said she needed a doctor Ali said he would take her in his car, but after going to get his car he then drove off leaving her on the stairwell at the flats.

Mr Greenhalgh said Miss Sharma was assisted by a neighbour and a taxi driver and when she was asked what had happened she replied:”My uncle has stabbed me. He’s jealous because I’m getting married.”

Miss Sharma underwent emergency surgery at the Leeds General Infirmary and Mr Greenhalgh said her injuries had been described as life-threatening.

She was treated for three lacerations to the front of her neck and was also found to have a litre of blood in her abdominal cavity.

Ali, of Westcombe Court, Wyke, was arrested and originally charged with attempted murder, but his guilty plea last month to a charge of causing grievous bodily harm with intent was accepted by the prosecution.

In a victim impact statement Miss Sharma described having nightmares in which she was being chased by Ali.

She said the physical injuries and psychological impact had led to her having to leave a job she enjoyed.

The court heard that in 2003 Ali was jailed for 30 months after he wounded his ex-wife with a knife.

Judge Jonathan Gibson concluded that Ali was a dangerous offender and locked him up for 11 years for what he called a "ferocious" attack, imposing an additional two-year licence period to his jail sentence.

“The severity of this attack alone shows that you are capable of inflicting life-threatening injuries," he told Ali.

The judge also made an indefinite restraining order which bans Ali from having any contact with Miss Sharma.
