A STRETCH of motorway has reopened after a crash which left a pedestrian in a "critical condition".

The closure lasted for around six hours and caused major morning traffic chaos.

The incident occurred at around 5:00am on the M621 eastbound, clockwise carriageway, between junction 3 (Leeds) and junction 4 (Hunslet).

It involved a pedestrian and a vehicle.

A police spokesperson said: "The male pedestrian has been taken to hospital in a critical condition."

The road was initially shut to allow traffic officers and emergency services to deal with the situation.

It was then kept closed to allow police to conduct investigations.

At around 5:41am, there was approximately one mile of traffic, which was building.

Highways England cameras showed at 7:46am that the congestion was stretching as far back as junction 1, (Morley).

Motorists were being asked to avoid this route if possible.

There was no official diversion route.

But drivers were being diverted from the carriageway at junction 3.
